Module 17, Fishing

1. Job functions and services provided by the following Fishing Authorities;-

a) Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (LKIM) is a government agency which is in charge of assisting the fisherman to improve their social economic status as well as their livelihood. It is also responsible to modernize the fisherman b y providing technical support and to improve their income and thus able to expand the growth of the country’s fishery industry.LKIM also provide grant for poor fisherman so that they are able to be owner of their own boat. It is also responsible to develop new fishery products.

b) Department of Fisheries Malaysia is responsible for the following;-
Ø Issuance of license for fisherman on fishing zones (deep sea fishing) and approval of type of fishing equipments to use on particular zones designated.
Ø Issuance of permit for export and import of fisheries products.
Ø Certification of fisheries products
Ø Training for fisherman for upgrading their expertise.
Ø International exhibition to promote Malaysian fisheries product globally.

2. Benefits to fisherman/locals with the formation of marine parks in Malaysia.
Marine parks are considered protected area and it is where the natural habitat of the fishes and with the formation of such marine parks it will provide a conducive environment for the fish to breed. The decline in fish catch is due to the destruction of its natural habitat, thus causing the population to decrease. A healthy ecosystem in marine parks will help to prevent certain fish from being extinct. As for fisheries, marine parks provide basic benefits such as providing nurseries for fish breeding, feeding grounds, spawning which will enhance the fish population. This indirectly will provide an increase in the fish population and fisherman will continue to harvest better catch in due future. This will help min providing better income for fisherman.


3. Do and don’t of Marine park.


Ø Avoid touching the fishes as this will cause fear on the marine creatures and in some cases it may react in self-defense when they perceive a human threat.
Ø Avoid harassing the fishes as this can cause stress on the marine life as well as disrupting feeding or mating patterns.
Ø Avoid littering as this can cause pollution which will eventually kill the fishes in the Marine parks.
Ø Avoid collecting souvenirs especially the coral reef as this are essential and nature that will ensure the survival of the fishes

4. Name of one of the Marine Park available in Malaysia and a brief description of the marine park.

Pulau Redang is among the most popular island in Malaysia. Located off the coast of the state of Terengganu, it has been well known for it’s coral paradise. There are rule to abide in the island which is laid down by the authorities concern. The basic 3 rules are no collecting of any coral , no destroying of any coral and no littering of any kind.Pulau Redang Marine Park is famous of it’s beautiful coral and marine life such as green turtles and many reef fishes.

Batfish, rabbitfish, white-eyed moray eels, parrotfish and even loggerhead turtles and many other species can be found here. Pulau Redang Marine Park had the beautiful unpolluted beach and crystal clear sea water that attracts bountiful fishes.
