Kelantan Pasttime - Gasing and Wau

A traditional past time for the locals in the East Coast. Especially during the monsoon season.
This scence can be seen at Kelantan, Terengganu .
Gasing is a Malaysia top, in fact in Malay language it is call gasing. Wau on the other hand is a kite. The design of the kite is now the symbol of Malaysian Airlines.
The gasing is made of solid wood and around the side of the top iron rim or lead rim is attached. This is to give the top balance and weight to sustain it's spinning momentum .
On this they normally had a competition and the competition is whoevers top spin for the longest shall be the winner.
It has played by 2 person- one of them shall throw to spin the top on the ground and another shall use a paddle to scoop it up to place in a stand . This is the time the top is timed.
Wau is a kite played during this time as wind is strong. Since the fisherman cannot go to sea to catch fish because the sea is rough and storm., they will stay a shore to enjoy the sports.
There are anumber of wau among them is wau Bulan, Wau Merak, Wau Kucing and Wau Jala Budi .
The wau is well decorated with designed and it is believe that kite was introduced to the Peninsular Malaysia ( at that time is known as Nusantara ) by Chinese seafarers and merchants.
